Avoiding debating the point

(via muppetpants)

So I haven’t been following this particular debate (and thank god, or I’d have probably leaked brains from my ears), and I’m honestly not sure that I can come up with any kind of coherent response because I’m me and this is the internet and I stopped typing coherent, serious responses to things on the internet a long time ago, BUT.

The reason that people reblogged that quote and made fun of it instead of actually responding to is that it’s an awful, awful argument. It’s ignoring so many facets of the whole debate that it’s kind of hard to know just where to attack it. And what’s the point, really? That quote isn’t going to change anyone’s mind. People who are against abortion read it and think “WOW, SO TRUE!” and people who are pro-choice read it and think “WHAT THE FUCK.”

So what I will discuss is this, from randyhaddock:

The only reason abortion is justified by those practicing it and supporting it is that you are targeting someone who has no voice and no way to defend him/herself. And that, by definition, makes you a coward and infinitely morally corrupt.

No, I’m pretty sure that the reason abortion is justified is that some people have finally realized that women have the right to determine what is going on with their bodies and that the reason it has to be protected is that many, many people still don’t seem to grasp that women themselves often don’t have voices or ways to defend themselves. And those who try to take the right of self-determination away from women, who I might add are definitely, unquestionably human beings, are the ones who are morally corrupt cowards.
