interesting to learn that irish immigrants were not considered white when they first came to america & lived in ghettos with african americans like five points, nyc.
The same was the case of Italians and many other Southern European migrants to nearly any of the colonies. Italians were considered to have ”a drop” of the “nigger blood”. Italians were in fact the second most lynched people in the United States (second to African-American lynchings that is). I can link you to some good articles on these experiences if you like?
I know that I would like those articles!
my Awful College Roommate sophomore year wrote me a really long, hilarious e-mail after she moved out that ended with “but what do I know? I’m just a white Christian girl.” which seemed to imply that, as a Jew, I was not white. this was in 2005.
also, while I don’t remember religion ever being the cause of any of our issues (it was mostly how she was BAT-SHIT FUCKING INSANE) she also threw one of those little green bibles that those people always hand out on campus underneath my desk when she was cleaning her stuff out of the room.
so yeah anyway
American Jews definitely used to not be “non-white”:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_quota
But they’re probably “white” today in the sense that so many American Jews are probably privy to whatever modes of privilege are bound up in “white privilege” . There’s maybe still a difference between “WASP” and “white”.
I was just surprised that in 2005, someone would still think of Jews as “non-white.” I probably shouldn’t have been - when I moved to Georgia, I was the first Jewish person that a lot of people in my elementary school had ever met, and I don’t think that this girl had been around very many Jewish people until we were roommates.
everything around race and privilege and the different kinds of “white” is pretty fascinating. it’s all so nuanced and I think that a lot of people don’t see that. and blah blah what-does-white-even-mean etc. etc.
