The Susan G. Komen Foundation Thinks You’re Stupid
The internet almost broke yesterday over the news that Susan G. Komen Foundation caved to anti-choice cultural warriors by yanking grant funds from Planned Parenthood. A good explanation of how the political pressure came from within is here.
The investigation into Planned Parenthood was launched by Rep. Cliff Stearns last fall in response to a gibberish report issued by lobbyists Americans United for Life.
“We question the basis for the investigation and whether Planned Parenthood is being singled out as part of a Republican vendetta against an organization that provides family planning and other medical care to low-income women and men,” wrote Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) and Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Co) in response.
This year, House Republicans have voted twice to strip Planned Parenthood of federal funding. You strongly supported these efforts, stating that “defunding Planned Parenthood should be a fiscal and moral priority for Congress.” You also unfairly smeared the organization when you claimed that Planned Parenthood is “willing to use public funds to commit a federal crime” and is “willing to ignore the law in promoting its services.”
These unfounded legislative attacks on Planned Parenthood have consistently failed. They were opposed by the Senate and President Obama and are not supported by the American people. It would be an abuse of the oversight process if you are now using the Committee’s investigative powers to harass Planned Parenthood again. Your fervent ideological opposition to Planned Parenthood does not justify launching this intrusive investigation.”
(And yes, this is the same Cliff Stearns who proposed that 9/11 responders be screened to ensure they are not terrorists before collecting any funds.)
Of course. That makes total sense—about as much as Komen yanking funding for breast cancer screening at places where low-income women already go for their womanly health needs, but partnering up with a fast food chain like KFC, a wellspring of health.
Stearn’s investigation into Planned Parenthood isn’t his first attempt at de-funding them, it’s just the latest in a series of increasingly bizarre attempts to do so.
And yesterday, after hundreds of people left notes on their Facebook wall, the Susan G. Komen Foundation has the pink cajones to post this message:
“Grant making decisions are not about politics—our priority is and always will be the women we serve. Making this issue political or leveraging it for fundraising purposes would be a disservice to women.”
See that, you stupid women and men with your dumb research and brains. This decision wasn’t political at all! And if say that it is, YOU are doing a disservice to women, not the organization yanking breast cancer screenings and selling fried bird slaughter!
I am pretty sure that my brain exploded earlier this morning when I read that message on the Susan G. Komen Facebook page. “Making this issue political.” ??? !!! :( :( :( :(
