Steven Millhauser: “Getting Closer" →
But now, as he stands at the end of waiting, something is wrong. He’s shaken deep down, as though he’ll lose something if the day begins. If he goes into the river he’ll lose the excitement, the feeling that everything matters because he’s getting closer and closer to the moment he’s been waiting for. When you have that feeling, everything’s full of life, every leaf, every pebble. But when you...

My sister may recall how, upon learning the word “misanthrope” as a child, she said, “Oh, Bethany! That’s what you are!”

No Easy Decision: MTV Does Abortchat →
I am really, really impressed with MTV for doing this special, finally. I think that they did a really great job of openly and honestly portraying the realities of abortion for teenagers in the United States. Dr. Drew kept himself in check and let the women speak for themselves. At the end of the show, all of the women agreed that abortion should not be stigmatized and encouraged others to speak...

Upon discovering a mysterious lump on my back just now, I did what any mature adult would do and put a bandaid over it because I can’t see a doctor until next week at the earliest and out of sight, out of mind right?

2010 Year in Review (via morninggloria, mizjenkins)
1. What did you do in 2010 that you’d never done before? I went to graduate school. Is that answer boring? The only other things I can think of are not legal (look at me! I’m so dangerous and cool because of the illegal things I sometimes do! but I’m not going to tell you what those illegal things are!)
2. Did you keep your new...

The following laws were instituted and by mid-year, once again a long forgotten hush fell over the land:
• People were still permitted to express opinions on politics but only on the condition that they do so wearing a red curly hair wig and giant red nose, which they would honk at the end of every sentence.
• If one expressed one’s self at the dinner table, that person was required to sit in...

Snowmageddon and Snowpocalypse are so last year. So far AccuWeather seems to be going with Blizzapolis. How should we refer to winter weather in late 2010 and 2011?

Who wants to be in a Con Air fan club with me?
Jewish Christmas Part I left me stuffed full of Chinese food and wine and intellectually stimulated by Die Hard and Con Air, neither of which I had seen before (I know!).
My second cousins are picking me up soon for Part II, and I have no idea what that will involve. I am expecting much less wine. But, you know, family.
Merry Jewish Christmas or whatever else you are celebrating today!
